EVANSDALE - John Leander Elenz, 63, of Evansdale, died at home Wednesday, Feb. 3, of cancer.

He was born Dec. 9, 1946, in New Hampton, son of Lawrence and Marie Papenheim Elenz. He married Sandy Onken, and they later divorced.

Mr. Elenz attended St. Mary’s School, North Washington, then worked as a farm hand for several years. He was employed at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, for 15 years before working at John Morrell, Sioux City. He then worked at Tyson’s, Waterloo, retiring in 2007.

Survived by: a son, Danny Jo (Paula) of Sioux City; four grandchildren; seven sisters, Theresa Stremcha and Katie Schmitt, both of New Hampton, Rita Cummings and Alice Kintzle, both of Waterloo, Rose (Leon) Meirick of Jesup, Maggie Faber of Algona and Tillie Havlik of Elma; and three brothers, Leo (Marilyn) of New Hampton, Mike (Sue) of Reno, Nev., and Larry of Lincoln, Neb.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Judy Elenz; two sisters, Mary Ann Webb and Barbara Borman; and a grandson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Center, New Hampton, with burial in New Hampton Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton, with a 6 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.
