THIES, NILSON, STONE, O’BRIEN, COLEMAN, BRICKLEY

WATERLOO - Rae L. Thies, 89, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Lakeview Lodge.

She was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Auckland, New Zealand, daughter of Thomas Stephen and Vera Christine Nilson Stone. She married Robert B. Thies on Dec. 27, 1946, in Dubuque. He died Sept. 9, 1997.

Mrs. Thies attended Epsom Girls’ Grammar school, as well as Kings College in Auckland, where she completed a secretarial course. She began working for her father at R Hill and Son Ltd., a publishing firm in Auckland. She worked for Interstate Power Co., Dubuque, before starting a family. She was a homemaker and worked secretarial duties for her husband’s home business.

Survived by: three sons, Stephen R. (Sue) of Des Moines, David C. (Kathy) of Elkhorn, Wis., and James G. of New Brighton, Minn.; a daughter, Brenda J. Thies of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Christy (Tim) Brickley and Nikki, Marc, Jacob, Grant, Megan, Matt, Alison and Connor Thies; a great-granddaughter, Lily Ray Brickley; a brother, Monte (Phyllis) Stone of Auckland; and two sisters, Dene O’Brien and Patricia Coleman, both of Auckland.

Preceded in death by: a brother, William Stone; and a sister, Lois Stone.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.

Rae and Robert met in New Zealand where he was in the U.S. Army serving in the finance department during World War II.
