WATERLOO - Gloria A. Smith, 84, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 16, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born April 27, 1925, in Leroy Township, Bremer County, daughter of Fred and Lydia Tiedt Bartels. She married Melvin Schnurstein, and they later divorced. She married Lavene L. Smith on Dec. 7, 1946, in Waterloo. He died Aug. 17, 1996.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and worked as an Avon sales associate. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW Post 1623 Auxiliary.

Survivors include: two sons, Leonard of Waterloo and Kevin of Evansdale; three daughters, Bernice Lines of Seligman, Ariz., and Beverly Beaumont and Marilyn Siebrands, both of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Helmuth Bartels of Sumner and Melvin Bartels of Hudson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: two sisters, Grace Bartels and Beatrice Gibbons Wilson.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden View Chapel, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 1 p.m. Saturday at Garden View Chapel.
