Michael Mitchell, whose death occurred at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, as was briefly noted in last night's issue, was one of the early settlers in this county.

He was born in County Galway, Ireland, March 27, 1827. In 1849 he came to America and after living in Ohio for a time came to Dubuque. Early in the fifties he came to this county and located in Eagle township.

In 1859 he was married to Mrs. Adelia O'Regan who survives him. Five children were born to them, three sons and two daughters. The oldest son, John, is dead, the others are living. The daughters, Misses Eliza and Kate Mitchell, and one son, S. A. Mitchell, reside in this city. Wm. H. Mitchell, the other son, lives in Lyon county. The wife and all the living children were present at the bedside at the time of his death and he was conscious up to the last moment. Death seems to have been caused by exhaustion following a severe cold which he contracted some days since.

After coming to Black Hawk county, as stated above, Mr. Mitchell located in Eagle township where he became one of the leading and prosperous farmers of that section. He remained a resident of that township until about three years ago when he moved with his family to this city. Deceased was a consistent member of the Catholic church and was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral will be held in Eagle next Sunday and the burial will be in Mt. Carmel cemetery in that township.

Besides his wife and children, Mr. Mitchell leaves three sisters, two living in Louisville, K'y, and one in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
