WATERLOO - Jackie Dean "John" Shimp, 80, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Nov. 29, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born June 18, 1929, in Dunkerton, son of Archie H. and Juanita L. Wilson Shimp. He married Kathleen Anne "Katie" Webber on June 26, 1954, in Waterloo. She died Aug. 4, 2006.

Mr. Shimp graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1948 and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict era. He was co-owner and operated B&J Ready Mix with his brother, Robert, from 1952-60. He then worked at Young Plumbing and Heating until 1978, and at Dewar Elevator with his brother, William, until 1985.

Survived by: two sons, Rodney (Cheryl) of Waterloo and David of Hawthorn Woods, Ill.; a daughter, Niki (Jim) Maas of Waterloo; four grandsons, Christopher and Joshua Shimp and Nicholas and Jonathan Maas; two step-grandchildren, Marisa (Rick Milks) and Patrick (Suzanne) Maas; a step great-grandchild, Justin Maas; a sister, Alice "Sal" Hauptly; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou "Tudie" Shimp.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, Richard "Rich," Robert "Bob" and William "Bill."

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Barclay, with burial at 1 p.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. Full graveside military rites will be conducted by Peter Kress Post 636 American Legion of Dunkerton. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 7 p.m. vigil Service. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and Columbus High School.

Jack enjoyed fishing, playing cards, canning vegetables, helping others and watching his grandsons’ sporting events. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Ridgeway Place, DaVita Cedar Valley Dialysis, Cedar Valley Hospice and Allen Hospital ER and 4 Tower.
