WATERLOO - Martin L. Grove, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Denver, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Allen Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure.

He was born Oct. 9, 1919, on a farm in Chickasaw County near New Hampton, son of Gilman and Minnie Gerstenkorn Grove. He married Grace E. Spangenberg on Oct. 15, 1949, in Armstrong. She died Oct. 7, 1997.

Mr. Grove worked with his father, who ran a sawmill and did carpenter work. He then went to San Francisco and graduated from Samuel Gompers trade school to learn welding and boiler making. He went to work for an oil refinery as a pipe welder. After the war, he returned to Waterloo and joined the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union, where he remained for 45 years as a pipe welder. He also taught welding and pipe fitting at the union's apprentice school.

Survived by: a son, James (Yvonne) Botemma of La Porte City; three stepdaughters, Mary Lou Martin of Jacksonville, Fla., Beverly (Bob) Lunstrom of St. Johns, Mich., and Patricia Goldstein of Georgia; a stepson, Robert Bailey of Augusta, Ga.; and several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Clarence Oliver; and a stepdaughter, Alice Rish.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
