LA PORTE CITY - Evelyn Joyce Kearns, 73, of La Porte City, died Monday, Nov. 2, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a short illness.

She was born Sept. 14, 1936, in Waterloo, daughter of Harold Leedy and Ruth Rosella Vaughn Scott. She married Lee "Red" Kearns on Sept. 26, 1954, in La Porte City.

Mrs. Kearns made a home for her children and husband until going to work in 1961 at Vinton Packing. She also worked as a caregiver at Williams Rest Home, La Porte City and Sunnycrest Nursing Home, Dysart, until September 1992.

Survived by: her husband; a son, Howard of La Porte City; four daughters, Vickey (Roger) Jones and Bonnie Kearns, both of Independence, Cindy (Michael) Bruce of La Porte City and Becky (David Burke) Kearns of Mount Auburn; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Carl (Beverly) Scott of Dysart; and six sisters, Barbara (Dan) Morris and Patricia Howard, both of Evansdale, and Mary (Harold) Steen, Janet (Calvin) Dunegan, Carol Marquard and Betty Scott, all of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: her parents; two brothers, Jimmy Scott in infancy and Donald Scott; and a sister, Kathryn Smith.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday at Heartland Community Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before services Friday, all at the church. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements
