WATERLOO - A. Dean Platt, 89, of Friendship Village Retirement Center, died there Oct. 25.

He was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Oelwein, son of George and Hazel Horning Platt. He married Lee Morf on June 4, 1942, in Ames.

Mr. Platt graduated from Oelwein High School and received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in nursery management. He founded Platt's Nursery in 1944. He had been a member of the Downtown Rotary Club since 1945; a member of First Presbyterian Church for 64 years where he served as an elder; the No Name Club, Associated Investor's Club and Toastmasters. He was named to Iowa Nurserymen's Association Hall of Fame in 1989, the Order of Pythagoras of Acacia Fraternity in 2009 and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International three times.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Richard Dean (Marsha) of Waterloo; a daughter, Ann (Gary) Fergemann of Kalamazoo, Mich.; five grandchildren, Brian (Katarzyna) Fergemann of Chicago, David Fergemann of Atlanta, Caitlyn (Trever) Sittig of New Hampton and Allison Platt and Breanna Platt, both of Waterloo; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Fergemann of Chicago; two sisters, Mae (Merv) Coover of Washington and Aris Montgomery of Colorado; and a brother, Robert of California.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Lloyd.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials: may be directed to Dean and Lee Platt Family Fund or Waterloo Rotary Club Fund at the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa
