WATERLOO - Arlen L. Wilder, 78, of Independence, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Oct. 30, at Buchanan County Health Center of natural causes.

He was born June 4, 1931, in Waterloo, son of Byrle M. and Norma Crosby Wilder. He married Marita J. Franck on Aug. 1, 1954, in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2009.

Mr. Wilder was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad for 40 years before retiring. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

Survived by: five sisters-in-law, Audrey Cook and Zelda (Joe) Andersen, both of Independence, Ellen Harris of Texas, Ramona (Allen) Peterson of LaPorte City and Loretta (Kenny) Wright of Walker; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Elsie) Franck of Arkansas and Maynard Franck of Woodward; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Joellen (Cliff) Mittlestradt of Ozark, Mo., and Dawn (Denny) Hoffman of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his loving wife; and a brother, Ian.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garden View Chapel, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
