WATERLOO - LaVanda R. Thornton, 90, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Sept. 19, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

She was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Winneshiek County, daughter of Richard and Sophia Mechlenberg Suckow. She married Lloyd Robert Thornton on Dec. 21, 1938. He died Jan. 22, 1981.

Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker.

Survived by: two sons, Earl (Betty) of Waterloo and Donald (Carole) of Evansdale; six daughters, Mary (David) Holman and Joann (Jim) Jordan, both of Waterloo, Norma (Gary) Westcott of Evansdale, Delores Peverill of Denver, Colo., Lois (Willis) Ott of Elkader and Karen (James) Wygle of La Porte City; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Delbert Suckow of Postville and Dwayne Suckow of Oelwein.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Sandra Kay Thornton; two brothers, Willis Suckow and Harold Mohs; and two sisters, Velma Miner and Verna Mae Schnuelle.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Smithfield Rural Cemetery, Monona, followed by public visitation at Marion Lutheran Church of Gunder, 14734 Agate Road, Elgin.

Memorials: may be directed to the family in care of Mary Holman, 1657 Longfellow Ave., Waterloo 50703.
