Mary M. Phillips

Mary Magdalena (Lena) Phillips, 83, of 2006 Independence Ave., died yesterday afternoon at St. Francis Hospital of complications due to old age.

She was born July 3, 1885, in Black Hawk County, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Amfahr Schmidt. She married John Phillips April 29, 1901, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Raymond.

She spent her entire life in the Black Hawk County.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, the St. Johns Rosary Society and the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Anna Levendusky, of Hazleton, Mrs. John Shields, of Fairbank, and Mrs. John McNally, of Kansas City, Mo.; five sons, Lawrence, of 2010 Independence Ave., Edward, of 321 Bratnober St., Alfred, of 1155 Williston Ave., Francis, of 111 Wallace Place, and Leland, of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Meisch of Gilbertville, and Mrs. William Wagner, of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Adam Schmidt, of Jesup, and Phillip Schmidt, of Sleepy Eye, Minn.; 35 grandchildren; and 51 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1962, three brothers and two sisters.

Services are pending at the O'Keefe and Towne funeral home.
