John Peter Phillips.

John Peter Phillips, 83, of 2006 Independence Ave., died at 8:05 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis hospital. Death was due to diabetes.

Mr. Phillips was a lifelong resident of Black Hawk county, having been born in Raymond Dec. 7, 1878.

He was married April 29, 1903, to Miss Lena Schmidt at Jesup. Mr. Phillips farmed most of his life.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.

Surviving are his widow and eight children. They are Mrs. Anna Levendusky, Hazleton; Lawrence Phillips, 2010 Independence Ave.; Edward, 321 Bratnober Ave.; Alfred, 1155 Williston Ave.; Mrs. John Shields, Fairbank; Francis, 629 Burbank Ave.; Leland, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. John McNally, Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Matt Phillips, New Richland, Minn., and Theodore of Good Thunder, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Sadler, Jesup; Mrs. Frank Youngblut, Oran, and Mrs. Cecilia Frost, Raymond. There are also 35 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Services are tentatively set for Monday morning. The body is at O'Keefe & Towne funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday.
