Delbert Hocken (1923-2009)

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Delbert Hocken, 86, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 18, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born February 21, 1923, in Winthrop, son of Garry and Mary Nibeck Hocken. On April 30, 1943, he married Bernita Young. She died Dec. 19, 1989. He married Virginia Adams on Jan. 5, 1991.

He graduated from Winthrop High School and worked for Hub Electric (now Paulson Electric) for 40 years, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Hocken was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He also was a longtime amateur radio operator; his call sign was W7/8OFV.

He was very active at Calvary United Methodist Church, Waterloo, for many years, and more recently was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Waterloo.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara (Ronald) Ritchie of Robins; a son, David (Sandra) of Avoca; a twin brother, Ralph of La Porte City; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Ruth, Ann and Ada.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Chesmore; and two brothers, Clyde and Glen.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, Waterloo. Memorials: may be directed to the family, and a memorial fund is being established.

Delbert was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
