MRS. MARY HANNA DIED YESTERDAY

One of Waterloo’s Earliest Settlers Passed Away at Ninety-Two

The death of Mrs. Mary Hanna, which occurred yesterday noon at 12:20 o’clock, marks the passing of Black Hawk county’s oldest resident. Death was due to a stroke of paralysis, with which she was seized on October 10. When death came, she was surrounded by her oldest son, George W. Hanna, and wife; daughters, Edith Colton and Mollie Tiller, and grand-daughter, Mary Dean.

Mary Melrose, a resident of Black Hawk county for sixty-seven years, was born in Edwards County, Illinois on June 9, 1821. She was united in marriage to George W. Hanna in 1837, and eight years later came to this county, where they took a homestead that is now the heart of the business section of West Waterloo.

Mrs. Hanna was a close student of the Bible and lived a beautiful Christian life that was an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. She was naturally of a cheery disposition and her home was always open to her many friends.

Six children survive to cherish the memory of their mother: Hon. Geo. W. Hanna of Luverne, Iowa; Judge John Q. Hanna of Blackwell, Texas; Consul General Philip C. Hanna of Monterey, Mexico; Mrs. Emily George, wife of John T. George of Jayton, Texas; Mrs. Mollie Tiller, wife of John Tiller of Artesian, S.D., and Mrs. Edith Colton, wife of A. H. Colton of Sherman, Texas.

Funeral services will be held from the home on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery, where Mr. Hanna is buried..
