Abraham Brown, Resident Since ’63, Dies at Age of 82
Abraham E. Brown, 82, an early-day resident of Black Hawk county, died at 10:30 a. m. today at his home, 808 South Street, of complications incident to age.
He was born April 25, 1845, in Westmoreland county, Pa., and came to Black Hawk County in September of 1863. He made his home with Sam H. Miller, a pioneer resident of the county, and during the first few years of his residence in Iowa worked as a farm hand for various pioneer settlers in Orange township.
On Jan. 13, 1867, he married Miss Lydia Lichty, the daughter of a pioneer of Orange township. Her father was well known to early settlers as the proprietor of the famous “Blue House,” the largest house on the prairie at that time, and a favorite stopping place of travelers in the early days.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Brown settled on a 160-acre farm in Orange township. He joined the Brethren church in 1876. He moved to Waterloo 23 years ago.
Surviving besides the widow are the following children: Mrs. Susan Reumiser, Portes, Kan.; John Brown, Davenport, Neb.; Mrs. Magdalena Peck, 272 Hammond avenue, Irvin Brown, Poyner township, and William Brown, Orange township.
The body is at Petersen Bros. mortuary pending funeral arrangements. The family requests that no flowers be sent.
