Julius H. Hanneke, an old and respected citizen on Washington street at about seven o’clock Monday morning. His health had been poor for about a year and a few weeks ago an attack of la grippe prostrated him, and this, with the former ailment, wrought his end. A post mortem held Monday evening showed his liver to be diseased and that his brain was seriously affected by his last illness. Mr. Hanneke was born in Somerset county, Pa., in 1840, and would have been 50 years of age had he lived until April 9th. Drifting westward previous to the war he spent several years in California and Oregon.
In 1865 he came to Waterloo and entering into partnership with Levi Beal, now deceased, they started a blacksmith shop on West Fourth street.
About 1870 he was married to a daughter of Henry Minich; she died in 1876, leaving a daughter who survives her parents. Subsequently Mr. Hanneke married Miss Katie Saylor who with his four sisters ar left to mourn him. A sister residing at Louisvile, Ky., arrived here Thursday and was with him in his last moments. He belonged to the Masonic order, was a worthy man and a good citizen. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 1:30 and at the Dunkard church at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Revs. L. R. Peifer and H. R. Holsinger officiating. --Waterloo Courier, Waterloo, Iowa (Wednesday 19 Mar 1890:8)
