Joseph M. Saylor, 83, died suddenly sometime during last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. D. Schrock, 218 Hammond avenue, after having been in poor health for over a year. Mr. Saylor was one of Black Hawk county's oldest citizens, having arrived in the county in April, 1862. He settled on a farm in Orange township two and one-half miles south of Waterloo and remained there until he retired to Waterloo a few years ago. His wife, Mrs. Mary Saylor, preceded him in death in June, 1918. Mr. and Mrs. Saylor were married in Somerset county, Pa., Mr. Saylor's home before coming to Iowa.
Five children were born to the union, two of whom are living--Mrs. Schrock, a daughter with whom he was making his home at the time of his death, and a son, Dan Saylor, who resides on the original Saylor farm. Mr. Saylor was a charter member of the Brethren church, known as Enon church, and was a member of the Brethren church of Waterloo until his death.
Funeral services will be at the Brethren church, Sixth and Wellington streets, Monday at 2 p. m., with Rev. William H. Beachler in charge. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. -- Waterloo Evening Courier, Waterloo, Iowa (Saturday, 30 Oct 1920)
