WATERLOO - Barbara Stubbee Woodward, 85, of Bickford Cottage, Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday (Dec. 20, 2008) at Bickford Cottage of natural causes.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1923, in Austin, Mower county, Minnesota, daughter of Grover and Leone Barr Stubbee. She graduated from Austin High School in 1941 and from Grinnell College in 1945 with a degree in psychology.

Barbara married Dr. Arthur W. Woodward, a Mason City native on March 7, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1990. The Woodward family continues to enjoy a home on the south shore of Clear Lake. Barbara was a stalwart supporter of Clear Lake and the beautiful oak trees surrounding it. Granite Lodge on Buzzard's Bay was noted for the trees that were saved by Arthur and Barbara Woodward when the trees were allowed to grow through the roof of the front porch and breezeway of their beloved home.

Barbara is survived by five children, Philip (Kathy) of Hot Springs, Ark., Christopher (Karen) of Minneapolis, Minn., David (Connie) of Clear Lake, Anne (Bill) White of Woodbury, Minn., and Cynthia (Todd) Peterson of Johnston. Her progeny include 10 grandchildren: Tracy (Mark) Ferguson of Indian Trail, N.C., Brian (Marnie) Woodward of Harrisburg, N.C., Jeffrey (Carrie) Woodward of Little Rock, Ark., Spencer Woodward of Minneapolis, Minn., Travis Woodward of Cambridge, England, Jessica White of Sofia, Bulgaria, Benjamin White of Fort Collins, Colo., Tyler Peterson of Des Moines, Trent Peterson of Des Moines, and Leah Peterson of Johnston. Her five great-grandchildren include Emily and Bryce Ferguson of Indian Trail, N.C., Katie, Maggie and Chloe Woodward of Harrisburg, N.C.

Barbara was past-president of the Black Hawk County Medical Auxiliary and a member of Chapter MR-PEO. She was an avid reader, active tennis player, stargazer and bird watcher. She approached life with an acerbic wit and rare intellect that will be missed.
