John M. Carpenter, 87, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006, in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

John Morton Carpenter was born on February 23, 1919, in Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, the son of John S. and Evangeline (Adams) Carpenter. He was a graduate of Iowa State University.

On January 17, 1942, he was united in marriage to Doris Bruch. John served in World War II as a flight engineer onboard B-29 aircraft while stationed in the Pacific. He was recalled to duty during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he worked as City Manager of Ames, Iowa for ten years and then served in that same capacity in Grand Island, Nebraska from 1963 to 1973.

Upon leaving Grand Island, John lived in Lincoln, Nebraska for 15 years. He was employed there as a civil engineer at Hoskins-Western-Sonderregger, Inc. before retiring in 1984, and remained in Lincoln until 1989. At that time he married Beverly Jane Lewis of Marshalltown, Iowa, and the couple eventually settled in Charles City. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and remained an active member of the Kiwanis Club, American Legion, and VFW during his lifetime.

Living family members include his wife, Jane of Charles City; his son, John Mark (Deann) Carpenter, and three grandchildren, Nate, Jake and Rachel Carpenter, all of Colorado; 5 step children, Mark (Cindy) Lewis of California, Beth (Rod) Wilson of Nashua, Robert (Jodee) Lewis of California, Kris Lewis of Osage and Kim (Ralph) Hennessy of New Hampton; a step daughter-in-law, Carolyn Lewis of Coralville; 13 step grandchildren; and six great step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Doris, his wife of 46 years; his parents, John S. and Evangeline Carpenter of San Francisco; his two sisters, Carol Howard of Oceanside and Jane Gallagher of Oakland, California; and a step son, Nile Lewis of Coralville.
