Howard grew up in rural Kellogg, Jasper County, and attended country school. Howard's family moved to a farm near Vinton in 1946. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1949. Howard was united in marriage to Myra Malinda Noe on Sept. 9, 1962, at the Garrison Methodist Church.

He was a real estate broker, was employed at the Vinton Van Company and at John Deere. Howard's passion was farming. He and Myra farmed and raised cattle near Garrison for 52 years. His favorite time of year was harvest, where he spent countless hours on the combine. Howard will always be remembered for his hard work, his compassion for others, his unfailing willingness to help his neighbors and his love for his family. He took great joy and pride in his children and grandchildren.
