MYRTLE EILEEN BROOKS, 85

Myrtle Eileen Brooks, 85, of Belle Plaine, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Per Myrt's wishes, her body has been cremated. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda J. Neels (James G. Tafolla) of Montezuma, and Dawn E. (Charles G.) Farmer of Gainesville, Va.; four grandchildren: Bill (Kim) Thompson, Sheryl (Todd) Freeborn, Tony (Nancy) Neels, Teresa L. Allbee; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Margie Lacy of Star, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, R. Blair Brooks; two sisters, Evalena Sands and Dorothy Wellborn; and two brothers, Ival and Ivan Bowen.

Myrt was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Central City, the daugher of Clark and Orra (Palmer) Bowen. Myrt married Robert Dean Akers on May 16, 1942, and they were later divorced. She married R. Blair (Bummer) Brooks in June of 1964. She owned and operated a sanitation company with her husband, R. Blair. Myrt was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years and was a past president of the Blakely-Steven Post #8876. Myrt also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing cards.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma Fire Department.
