Obituary:
Stewart Alburtis Hays, the son of Alice Mae Turner and Stewart (Burt) Alburtis Hays was born September 4, 1920, northeast of Exira, Iowa and died April 11, 2014, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg, Nebraska at the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 7 days. His father Stewart died in an auto accident one month before Stewart was born.
Stewart was baptized on September 10, 1936, at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa. He attended Greeley Center School and the Exira High School. At the age of 16, he started farming with his mother.
On May 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to FloraBelle Petersen at the Exira Christian Church in Exira. Three children were born to this union. Stewart and Florie lived on the family farm northeast of Exira until 1991. He farmed until the fall of 1978. During this time he also sold Schuler wagons and Westendorf loaders and gates. Stewart was later employed by Highway Implement in Audubon, Iowa and then Faga Implement in Adair, Iowa. He retired at the age of 73 in 1993. They moved to Atlantic, Iowa where they lived for 18 years. On March 1, 2009, they moved to Osceola, Nebraska. FloraBelle died September 10, 2009. Stewart then moved into the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg, Nebraska.
Stewart was a member of the Exira Christian Church in Exira where he served as a deacon, board chairman, and on various committees. He was a member of the Exodus Lodge #342 in Exira and a member of the Eastern Star. He was a director of the Greeley Center School, served on the Audubon County ASCS for Greeley Township, was the president of the Guthrie County REC board, and served on the Danish Mutual Insurance Board. Stewart is remembered for his friendliness, leadership ability, love of family, his 69 years of marriage to FloraBelle, and his love of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Stewart is preceded in death by his wife FloraBelle Hays; his son Dennis Hays; his grandson Brian Hays; his parents; and his brothers: Harold Hays; Merion and wife Maxine Hays.
Survivors include his children David and wife Shirley Hays of Dayton, Iowa; Becky and husband Charles Hays of Osceola, Nebraska; his daughter-in-law Denise Hays of Urbandale, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Monday morning at 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service at the Exira Christian Church in Exira.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Glen Meyers on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa.
