Herman Heckman Dies of
Accidental Poisoning

----------

Herman Heckman, well known farm-
er residing southeast of this place,
died at his home about noon Saturday
after taking sodium fluoride through
a mistake. Mr. Heckman had not been
feeling well for several days and went
to the pantry at his home and took
down a package he believed to con-
tain epsom salts, but which later prov-
ed to be sodium fluoride, a deadly in-
secticide.

After taking a spoonful of pow-
der Heckman became violently ill and
a physician was summoned, but no-
thing could be done to save him. His
death occurred four and one-half hours
after taking the fatal dose.

Funeral services were held Tuesday
afternoon at two o'clock at S. John's
Lutheran church southeast of Exira
with the pastor, Rev. George Greisse,
in charge. Burial was in the church
cemetery.

Herman Heckman was born in
Baden, Germany, and came to this
country when but a young lad. He
is survived by the widow, two sons and
four daughters. Two brothers, Lou
and Emil, of Adair, and Henry at
Harrisburg, Arkansas; three sisters,
Mrs. John Aupperle of Anita, Mrs.
Charles McMurphy and Miss Louise
Heckman of Adair, also survive.
