NIELS C. N. SCHMIDT DIED
MONDAY NIGHT, AUDUBON

----------

Niels C. N. Schmidt, 64, passed
away late Monday evening at his home
in Audubon. Death followed a long
illness. Mr. Schmidt was a native
of Denmark, had been a resident of
Audubon county since 1888, and of
Audubon for the past nine years.
Not long ago he sustained a broken
leg, and due to a poor physical condi-
tion brought about by an illness of
about eighteen months duration
caused by cancer, this shock proved
to(o) great for him to rally.

The deceased was born at Sonder
Stenderup, Kolling, Denmark, June 22,
1861. Here he spent the first twenty-
three years of his life and was bap-
tised and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith. In 1884 he came to this coun-
try, settling first at Hartford, Conn.
After a residence of a year there he
came to Iowa, locating in Shelby
county. His marriage to Maren Lud-
wig took place on July 18, 1888, the
Rev. Dr. P. S. Vig performing the
ceremony.

Following their marriage, Mr. and
Mrs. Schmidt moved to a farm four
miles west of Audubon, nearly the
same place where the Ebenezer Dan-
ish Lutheran church is now standing.
A few years later a farm one mile
farther north was purchased and here
they made their home until they
moved to Audubon in the fall of 1917.

Mr. Schmidt was one of the char-
ter members of the Ebenezer Dan-
ish Lutheran church, which was or-
ganil(z)ed in 1895. He transferred his
membership to the Danish Lutheran
church of Audubon five years ago.

He is survived by his wife, one
son, Soren, who lives five miles west
of Audubon; two daughters, Mrs.
Kirsten Jensen, wife of Rev. P. C.
Jensen of Exira; and Mrs. Elene
Petersen of Hamlin. One child died
in infancy. He is also survived by a
brother, Hans W. Schmidt of Audu-
bon.

Funeral services will be held to-
morrow afternoon. Services at the
Danish Lutheran church will be held
at 1:30, conducted by Revs Fred C.
M. Hansen, and P. C. Jensen. They
will be followed by services at the
Ebenezer church, Rev. N. L. Nielsen
officiating. Burial will take place in
the Ebenezer cemetery.
