FUNERAL HELD FOR AUDUBON COUNTY’S LAST REAL PIONEER
Matilda Bruner, 86, Passes Sunday. Was Member of First Settlement on Troublesome CreekExira, Ia., Aug. 6.--(Special)--Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Bruner, 86, the last of the real pioneers of Audubon County, who died Sunday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. F. D. Porter of Audubon, from complications due to old age, were held at the Exira Church of Christ this afternoon. The services were in charge of the Rev. A. G. Whittier and interment was in the Exira Cemetery.
Born in Illinois
Mrs. Bruner was born July 26, 1844 at Homer, Ill., and was united in marriage at Homer, Dec. 15, 1863 to Perry Bruner. Mr. Bruner died in 1917.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruner came to Audubon County in 1865 and settled on the Troublesome Creek, five miles east of Exira. They built a log cabin where they lived a long period of years. Later they built a new home on the old farm. The old log cabin still stands and is one of the landmarks of Audubon County. Mrs. Bruner lived on the farm until five years ago when she went to Audubon to make her home.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Henry Phippin of Casey and Mrs. J. I. Coe of Grand Island, Neb., three sons, Leslie Bruner of Shelton, Neb., Milton Bruner of Greenfield, Ia., and Jesse Bruner of Exira; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Spriggs of Pittsboro, Ind., and Mrs. Bell Gladden of Homer; a brother, Gilford Swearingen of Indianapolis, Ind.; twenty-five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
