Mrs. John Kommes Answers
Final Summons Following
Short Sickness

Mrs. John Kommes, one of the pio-
neers of Audubon county, died at the
family home here (Exira) Monday evening.
She had been in failing health for
some time but had been able to be
about until a short time ago. Mrs.
Kommes had been blind since two
years ago last March.

The deceased had lived in this coun-
try continuously since May, 1885, hav-
ing lived on farms here until thirteeen
years ago when they retired to Exira.
During the World War, Mrs. Kommes
had the distinction of knitting more
sox for the American soldiers than
any woman in the county. She also
knit many othere articles of apparel.

On October 3, Mr. and Mrs. Kommes
celebrated their 63rd wedding anniver-
sary. Their four sons were at home
to help celebrate the occasion and to
make the event one of cheer.

Born in Europe

Margaret Nickels Kommes was born
September 10, 1843, at Lintgen, Grand
Duche of Luxemburg, Europe. She
was united in marriage to John Kom-
mes on October 3, 1866. In May, 1855,
they came to the United States coming
straight to Exira and settling on a
farm in Greeley township. To this
union were born eleven children, seven
of whom preceded the mother in death.
Surviving are the husband and four
sons, P. J. Kommes of Carroll, John
P. Kommes of LeMars, Anthony Kom-
mes of Howard, S. D., and Frank Kom-
mes of Exira. One sister, Mrs. Anton
Thill of Almena, Wisconsin also sur-
vives.

Funeral Service Wednesday

Funeral services were held at nine
o'clock Wednesday morning at Holy
Trinity church in Exira with the Rev.
Fr. Aspinwall in charge. Burial was
in the Exira Catholic cemetery.
