OBITUARY #1: PIONEER EXIRAN DIES FOLLOWING ILLNESS OF WEEK; JAMES H. MARTIN, LONG TIME RESIDENT OF AUDUBON COUNTY, PASSES LAST EVE.

EXIRA, Ia., Sept. 30 (1925) -- (Special to News Telegraph (Atlantic, IA) -- James Martin, Pioneer resident of this city, passed away at his home here last evening after an illness of about a week with stomach trouble. He resided in Audubon Township for a number of years and upon retiring from his farm twenty-three years ago moved to this city where he made a host of friends during his residence here.

Native of Virginia

The deceased was born in Augusta county, Virginia on April 22, 1837, and came to Iowa when thirteen years of age, settling at Shueyville in Johnson county.

On January 19, 1865, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Goforth at Western, Ia., and in 1869 Mr. Martin and his wife moved to Audubon county, settling on a farm in Audubon township, where they resided until twenty-three years ago, when they moved to Exira.

Seven Children

Seven children survive the deceased as does also his wife. He has four sons, John and Bruce of this city, George of Federal, Wyo., and Rodney of Spokane, Wash. Three daughters surviving are Mrs. Blanche Davis, Mrs. Jessie Phippin (Phippen), and Mrs. Winifred Rigely (Ridgley) of this city. One daughter is deceased.

As yet no funeral arrangements have been made.

PIONEER OF COUNTY PASSES MONDAY EVE; James H. Martin Dies Following Short Illness. Funeral Service Tomorrow

James H. Martin, pioneer resident of this county and a resident of this place the past twenty-three years, died at his home Monday night. His death came after an illness of about a week with stomach trouble.

The deceased was born in Augusta county, Virginia, April 22, 1837. He came to this state with his parents when quite young and the family settled at Sheuyville (Shueyville), in Johnson county.

On January 19, 1865, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Toforth (Goforth) at Western, Iowa, and in 1869 he and his wife moved to Audubon county, settling on a farm in Audubon township where they resided until moving to town, twenty-three years ago.

Besides the wife he leaves to mourn his passing seven children. They are John and Bruce Martin of near this place; George of Federal, Wyoming; Rodney of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Blanche Davis, Mrs. Jessie Phippen and Mrs. Winifred Ridgeley of this place. One daughter died in infancy (Lulu Belle). He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Esta Kline of this place and Mrs. Margaret Donahue (Dunahugh) of Cedar Rapids; one brother (Jacob Franklin) of Shueyville, also survives.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Christian church with Rev. Dale Humbert assisted by Rev. Robert N. Chord, in charge. Interment will be in Exira cemetery.
