George W. Hoover Dies in Audubon; Had Lived Here or in County During Greater Part of Life.George W. Hoover, widely known former Audubon business man and Audubon county farmer, and a resident of this city and of Greeley township during the major part of his life, died here Monday [14 July 1941] at 1:00 a.m. He was 85.
Mr. Hoover had been in failing health about two years. He had returned to Audubon county from Casper, Wyoming in April, and had divided his time between Exira and Audubon since then.
Mr. Hoover was born Jan. 14, 1856 on a farm near Iowa City, a son of George and Catherine (Horton) Hoover.
He came to Audubon county when he was 20 years old. He farmed in Greeley township, and engaged incidentally in the carpenter's trade, building a number of this county's rural school houses.
His marriage to Miss Margaret Emily Reynolds took place Jan. 8, 1882. They spent their entire married life in Audubon county, moving to this city in 1888. Mr. Hoover engaged in the hardware business here for 20 years, and was later proprietor of a furniture and undertaking establishment.
He was, for a number of years, president of the Audubon County Agricultural society, and had charge of Maple Grove cemetery here eight years.
He was for many years a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and also affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks at Atlantic.
Mr. Hoover's wife died Feb. 11, 1920. Since then, he had divided his time largely between Casper, Wyo., where he made his home with a daughter, and Guthrie county, Ia., where he spent a number of years on a farm with his sister, Mrs. Maria Anciaux, now of Exira.
His survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mae Waldron of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Wm. H. Freeman of Casper, Wyo., and a son, Carl Hoover of Clinton, Ia. A son, Raymond Edwin Hoover, died Nov. 3, 1928.
Other survivors include the sister, Mrs. Maria Anciaux of Exira, a half-brother, Tom Coglan of Iowa City, and four grandchildren. The latter are Louis Edwin Hoover, Marjorie Frances Higgins and George Worth Hoover, all of Fresno, Calif. and all children of Carl Hoover, and Margaret Cora Blacketer of Denver, Colo., daughter of the late Raymond Hoover.
Funeral services for Mr. Hoover were Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the F. H. McFadden funeral home here. The Rev. O. E. Cooley, Audubon Methodist pastor, officiated. The body was taken to Des Moines for cremation, and the ashes will be buried in Maple Grove cemetery here.
