succumbs from
long illess
Funeral services for Mrs.
Hans P. Larsen, 81, well
known Exira woman, were
held Monday afternoon at the
Exira Federated church with
the Rev. Brown of Des Moines
officiating.Mrs. Larsen died at 6:35
p.m. Thursday, August 7, at
the Audubon County Memor-
ial hospital where she was a
patient since the previous
Wednesday. She had been in
failing health for the last three
years.
Born October 6, 1876, near
Exira, she was a daughter of
pioneer settlers in Audubon
township, James and Elizabeth
Goforth Martin. She spent her
entire lifetime in the Exira
community.
She was married to Robert
Phippen March 10, 1896 and
five sons were born to this
union. Mr. Phippen preceded
her in death; also three sons,
Hollis, Everett and Harry.
She later married Hans P.
Larsen, who survives together
with her two sons, Lester Phip-
pen of Omaha, Nebraska and
Virgil Phippen of Wilmington,
California; two sisters, Mrs.
Blanche Davis and Mrs. Wini-
fred Ridgley of Exira, one
brother. Rodney Martin of
Spokane, Washington; nine
grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren. Three brothers,
John, George and Bruce Mar-
tin and a sister in infancy are
also predeceased.
She was a member of the
Exira Federated church and
an active member of the Wo-
men's Association as long as
her health permitted.Mrs. Chas. Powers presided
at the organ and accompanied
a quartet comprised of Mrs.
Maude Oldaker, Mrs. Ethel
Minerman, Mrs. Jack Vande
Brake and Mrs. Ronald St.
John. Selections were "Going
Down the Valley" and "In the
Sweet Bye and Bye"Casket bearers were William
Ludwig, George Bartelt, Ever-
ett Crees, Keith Martin, Basil
Martin and Earl Wheeler.Interment was in the Exira
cemetery.
