From the Audubon Advocate dated October 5, 1916:

MRS. W. S. ROBERTS DIES VERY SUDDEN
Fell at Her Home Yesterday Morning Which Brought On Convulsions
Lived Short Time After Birth of a Son

The people of Audubon were shocked yesterday morning to hear the report of the death of Mrs. W. S. Roberts, wife of alderman Roberts.
The first report, however, proved false, but about 5:45 last evening Mrs. Roberts breathed her last.

Her death was due to a fall early in the morning while engaged in her usual household duties. She sustained injuries to the back of her head
while getting breakfast. She hardly recovered from the effects of this fall and as she was to become a mother, her condition became serious.
In her weakened condition she was thrown into convulsions, the first of which came about ten o’clock and it was then that the report gained circulation of her dropping dead. She was revived, however, and at half past three in
the afternoon gave birth to a son. Her condition was alarming and from the very first little hope of recovery was entertained. She lingered between life and death until late in the afternoon and just before six o’clock she
passed to the great beyond. All efforts possible were made to save her life
and that of the premature child, but at eleven o’clock last night the child also died.

The death of Mrs. Roberts is particularly sad. She was the mother of a large family and devoted almost every moment of her time to the comfort and care of them. Very little of her time was devoted to things outside of the home and family. She was loved and admired for her womanly traits of character and beautiful Christian life. She was a member of the Christian church and was true to her faith until the very end.

Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of Samuel and Nancy Shoup, former residents of this county. Her mother died a few years ago and her father
has been making his home in Colorado. A strange coincidence is that her father came the same day to make her a visit. She was married to
W. S. Roberts Nov. 14, 1886, and to this union the following children were born: Samuel Perry; Mrs. Iva May Martin of Shenandoah;
Mrs. Cora E. Davis of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Frances Katsontonas of Lincoln, Nebr.; Alvin, Jess, Glenn, Lillian, Bonnie, Vernon, Louis, Edward and Martha, all of whom reside at home.

This morning no arrangements for the funeral have been made, but unless the children from a distance come home, it is likely that services will take place tomorrow.

The sympathy of the entire community is with Mr. Roberts and his family of small children. The burden of grief is a heavy load to carry. In the
presence of such a sorrow, how cold and impotent are words and how doubly deep would be the grief over the grave did not the rainbow of Christian hope span the dark gulf between time and eternity, and such pure lives inspire the belief that there is a better world beyond, where,
filled from the corroding cares of earth, the good and true are reunited “after life’s fitful fever”.
