EXIRA PEOPLE IN
NEAR FATAL CRASH

---------

Two Exira young people, Jerry
Chase and Miss Leota Martes, nar-
rowly escaped injury Sunday of last
week when the car in which they were
driving was struck by No. 15, west
bound passenger train, at an inter-
section near the Great Western depot
at Carroll.

Mr. Chase and Miss Martes had
been visiting at the Onken home in
Carroll and were returning to Exira
when the accident occurred. Miss
Martes was pinned under the car,
which was pushed from the track, and
with the help of a number of men who
shortly arrived upon the scene, was
extricated and found to have sus-
tained only slight injuries. Mr. Chase
was thrown clear of the car and also
sustained minor injuries. The car,
a Chandler touring, was damaged be-
yond repair.

Note: Earl Julius "Jerry" Chase (1905-1986) and Leota Catherine Martes (1907-1990) were married later that year on November 07, 1926 at the Methodist parsonage in Audubon, Rev. Parker performing the ceremony.
