I am Alice Daniels, one of the volunteers for Appanoose Co, and found something for you in History of Appanoose County, 1986.....

Smith Family

Job G. Smith, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Perrigo Smith, was born circa 1810 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. On March 26, 1829, he married Elizabeth Sullivan in Harrison County, Ohio, and then moved to Morgan County, Ohio. Job purchased 219 acres of land in Appanoose County, Iowa, on April 4, 1856. From this land, Job and Elizabeth gave one acre of land for the purpose of a grave yard and school lot forever, April 22, 1870. The grave yard became known as Shafer Cemetery and the school as Pleasant Hill School. Job died May 29, 1873, and Elizabeth died September 1, 1896. Both are buried in Shafer Cemetery. They had the following children: John P., Sarah M., Mary Ann, Daniel W., Thomas H., Samuel Harvey and Martha.

Samuel Harvey Smith, born December 15, 1842, in Morgan County, Ohio, married Mary Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Simon and Margaret Bryant Walker, of Appanoose County, on September 7, 1862. On October 1, 1862, with written consent of his parent, Samuel enlisted at Iconioum, Iowa, as a private, Co. F, 36 Reg't Iowa Infantry for a period of three years. Her served in battles at Elkins Ford, Prairie D'Ann, Camden and Marks Mills, Arkansas, where he was captured by the enemy, April 25, 1864. Samuel was held prisoner at Tyler, Texas. On February 25, 1865, he was exchanged as prisoner of war at Red River L'dg, Louisiana. He mustered out August 24, 1865 at DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas. While serving in Co. F, Samuel was disabled by measles and contracted lung trouble. Samuel Harvey was a farmer, a member of the M. E. Church at Walnut City and in 1893 served as an elected member of the county board of supervisors. He served only a few days before taking sick. He died March 3, 1894. Mary Elizabeth was born September 23, 1845 in Morgan County, Missouri and died at Walnut City, November 12, 1936. Both are buried in Shafer Cemetery. The had the following children: Charles Edgar, William P., Rutherford B., Della G., who died as a child, John Logan and Henry K., who died in infancy.

Charles Edgar Smith, born January 21, 1867 in Appanoose County, married Almedia Francis Harris, daughter of Reuben and Esther Walker Harris of Wayne County, on January 29, 1893. Charles was a farmer, a member of the M. E. Church at Walnut City, and a Township Trustee at the time of his death. He died from heart failure while driving his buggy to Mystic, April 7, 1919. Almedia died April 24, 1926. Both are buried in the Shafer Cemetery. They had the following children: Raymond Holt, Harry Robert, and Elsie Ethel.

Harry Robert Smith, born October 24, 1896 in Appanoose County, ,married Nellie Magdalene LaMasney, daughter of James W. and Cora Bell Osborn LaMasney of Appanoose County, December 22, 1917. He also farmed a portion of the land farmed by his ancestors. Harry attended the M. E. Church at Walnut City. In 1930, he sold his farm and later moved to Rockford, Illinois. He died September 8, 1982 and is buried at Willwood Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois. His wife is still living. They had two children: Charles Edgar and Mildred Colleen.

Charles Edgar Smith was born April 4, 1919 in Appanoose County. He was raised on the family farm in Walnut Township and attended the Pleasant High School. He moved with his family to Rockford, Illinois.
