I don't know if you are familiar with the archives for the Appanoose County newspapers here:

I found this article stating that Gene Louis Kennis was a miner at the Sunshine mine when he was injured in 1917:

Click on the map and find mine 30 to see where it was.

Here's a page which listed marriages in 1909 and shows that Louis and Mary married in October:

I couldn't find a death notice or obituary but did find a note that someone bought his property in April, 1921.
