In Response To: Mary McClusk(e)y - 1885 Census (Joe Sisson)

I didn’t find anything on the death or burial of Isaac or Kate McCluskey.

Mary McCluskey was living with Joshua and Malinda Riggs in both the 1880 and 1885 censuses in Unionville, Appanoose County. Also living there are two other children, Ida Parkinson (born 1854 in KS) and Lewis Burlingame (born 1873 in KS). I found Joshua still living there, widowed, in the 1900 census. Lewis Burlingame was in the 1900 census in Franklin County, KS but I found no trace of any McCluskey's there.

I believe I found Isaac (born 1839 in PA) in the 1850 census for Shenango, Mercer County, PA. He said he was born in PA and Mary said both of her parents were born in PA.

Supporting that view is that Charles A. (older brother of Mary) is in Shenango, Mercer County, PA in the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses. His birth year (1869) and location (Iowa) match exactly, along with the middle initial A. He probably moved back there to be with family who did not move to Iowa.

Here’s Isaac in that 1850 census, in Shenanago, living with his mother Mary (age 45 and born in PA) but no father. There are 8 other children. The last name is spelled McCloskey, but that’s a normal misspelling.

There is also an Isaac L. McCluskey who registered for the Civil War draft in 1863 who listed his residence as Shenango, Mercer County. I found that on Ancestry.com. You’ll have to subscribe to see that or go a local library or Family History Center if you don’t have a subscription.

I’d say it’s highly likely that’s your Isaac.
