OBITUARY
Charles Rogers Elledge

Charles Rogers Elledge was born November 5, 1857, Son of Harvey and Mary Rogers Elledge, and passed away, December 19, 1940, aged 83 years, one month and 14 days.
He had spent the last two winters in Texas and his longing to see the only daughter, as well as to escape the winter, led him to leave Iowa for Texas. Within a few days after his arrival in that state he was stricken. Everything was done on his behalf but to no avail. He departed to be with those he loved.
Mr. Elledge was united in marriage with Matilda Staley, by Mr. Jones, in August, 1880. They had celebrated their 58th anniversary before Mrs. Elledge’s passing two years ago.
Preceding him in death besides Mrs. Elledge were one son and two daughters. He leaves four children, R. L. Of Centerville, F. B. Of Jerome, G. H. Of near Centerville and Mrs. A. M. Bowie of San Benito, Texas.
One brother, E. K. Elledge. Of Cincinnati, one sister, Mrs. Emma Hibbard of Arkansas, 2 half sisters, Mrs. Eva Boone and Mrs. Maude Gruezenbeck, of Minnesota, one half brother Carl, whose present address is unknown, and five grandchildren survive him.
Mr. Elledge united with the Christian church at Exline many years ago. Reverend Renfro, who some older people remember, baptized both Mr. and Mrs. Elledge.
Mr. Elledge lived a long and useful life. After his marriage he, with Mrs. Elledge, moved to Western Nebraska where he homesteaded a claim. After two years he returns to Iowa.
He then engaged informing and later owned a sawmill near Sedan. The old boardwalks around the Square in Centerville were sawed by Mr. Elledge. Later he and E. K. Elledge sawed near Exline and Cincinnati.
Afterword he operated a harness shop where he turned out sturdy handmade farm harness, as well as fancy driving sets.
Engaging in business Mr. Elledge owned and managing grocery stores both in Cincinnati and Centerville.
On retirement from active business Mr. Elledge engaged in gardening as a hobby. He had splendid success with what he called his gardens.
He was very particular, never allowing work to leave his hand until as near perfect as was at all possible. He retained his memory and was very pleasant to visit, being interested in world affairs, he read the daily papers diligently.
He will be missed by many friends, as well as by his family.
Funeral services were held from the Christian search church in Cincinnati Monday afternoon, with H. E. Trimble officiating. Burial was in the Cincinnati cemetery.
