Death of B. P. Mells
He Was an Old Resident of Appanoose Coun and CentervilleBenjamin P. Mells died suddenly of neuralgia of the heart at 1:45 p.m. Yesterday afternoon at his home, 702 East State St. Mr. Mells was an old resident of Appanoose, having lived in this vicinity for nearly 50 years. Few men in Centerville were so widely known and that notwithstanding he was of a quiet turn and took a little part in public life. Death came without warning although he had been failing for the last few years and friends could see that age was telling upon his naturally strong constitution, yet no one thought death would come so suddenly.
To the application of a hot water bag. At the time of his death he was sitting in a chair beside his daughter, Mrs. William Nickell who was startled to see him collapse and his body fall over the arms of the chair. She immediately notified some of the nearest neighbors and a physician was called but the stricken man expired before medical aid could be secured.
Mr. Mells came from Boston, in his native country, England, 50 years ago coming to Michigan where he remained a few years and then settled in Ottawa, selecting Appnoose as his home. For a number of years he lived on a section of land after Brazil and about town was started by him, he being one of their early developers of the coal industry in that region. Later he retired from the farm and purchased properties in this city which has been his home for many years
The only relatives Mr. Mells had in this country were a brother in Michigan and his daughter Mrs. Sadie Nickell, who with her husband has lived with him at the old home Place an been a comfort to him in his declining years. His wife is buried in Oakland cemetery and his son, Porter, died and was buried in the state of Washington. He was born in England, January 18, 1825, being aged 78 years, one month and 888 days. Among his neighbors and friends he was known as an upright an honest man and citizen.
Funeral services will be held from his lake residence on E. State St. tomorrow morning at 10:30 10:30 a.m. and internment will be made at Oakland cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. Amy. V. Kendrick, of the Methodist church, of wisdom of which Mr. Mells have been a member for 25 years.
