John Chadd
John W. Chadd, son of William and Harriet Chadd, was born at Independence, Iowa, April 11, 1857, and passed away after several months of illness at his home near Courtland, May 27, 1939 at the age of 82 years, one month, and 16 days

Mr. Chadd was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Standley of Plano, Iowa, January 4,1875 and seven children were born to them. Those left to mourn his passing are Jesse and Bertha of the home, Mrs. Florence Winstead and Mrs. Clara Blackburne of Courtland, Mrs. Ida Stone of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Minnie Smith of Topeka, and many friends and neighbors. Mrs. Chadd passed away April 18, 1933, and one son, John died August 15, 1904.

In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Chadd and three children migrated to Kansas in true pioneer fashion in a covered wagon drawn by horses, enduring the hardships and privations of early settlers. They located first in Union Valley north of Belleville, later moving to a farm north west of Courtland, and have made their home on this farm 44 years.

Mr. Chadd’s duties were faced with courage born of pioneer prairie life and his greatest pleasures centering on the love of his family and friends. He faced death as he faced life, with courage and fortitude.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church on Monday, May 29, the Reverend Mr. Parks of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Courtland cemetery.
