Aged Resident of City Taken Here Suddenly

Mrs. John Atkinson Died at the Home of Mrs. Selma Olson Last Evening.

Mrs. John Atkinson, 86, for more than half a century, a well known resident of this city and community, died at the home of Mrs. Selma Olson, at 820 South Main street at 5:45 p.m. yesterday. Death came suddenly and without any immediately preceding illness.

Mrs. Olson had urged Mrs. Atkinson to lie down for a short time and rest yesterday afternoon before reading the evening newspapers as was her custom. Shortly after she had lain down Mrs. Atkinson passed away. Her death came so suddenly that is was impossible for nearby relatives to arrive before she departed. Mrs. Atkinson had lived with Mrs. Olson for the past five years.

She was born in Oil City, Pa., and was Jane English before her marriage to Mr. Atkinson. Together the young couple came from Pennsylvania to this country over 50 years ago. They established their residence in this city and for more than 40 years resided at 1232 South Main street. Mr. Atkinson was one of the first members and officials of the local United Mine Workers organization. His death preceded that of his wife's 12 years.

Surviving children are Ed Atkinson, of near Cincinnati, Clyde, of Springfield, Ill., John, of Davenport, Harry of Rockford, and Mrs. Thomas Woods Sr., of this city. There are two sisters Mrs. John Lamb, of Springfield, Ill., and Mrs. C.W. Fink, of Baltimore, Md. Also surviving are 20 great grand children and 31 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Atkinson was an oarncal worker and long time member of the Gospel Congregation here. Funeral services will be at the church at 2:00 o'clock, Monday with W.W. White officiating, and burial will be in the family lot at Oakland.
