Hugh Gail Guernsey, 100, of Calvin Manor in Des Moines, formerly of Centerville, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 18, 1992, at the Calvin Manor in Des Moines.
He was born in Appanoose County near Centerville on Aug. 10, 1892, to Joe Brown and Elizabeth (Showalter) Guernsey. He was united in marriage to Marquerite Naumann in Davenport on Aug. 28, 1926. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1978.
Also preceding him were his parents; a sister, Lucy Glen Wilson; and one niece, Charlotte Rogers.
Surviors include his twin daughters, Kathryn (Mrs. Wayne) Darrah, of Plano and Marquerite (Mrs. Howard) Traxler of VanMeter; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Kathryn Buckford; one nephew, Joe Wilson; three nieces, Betty Johnson, Janet Martin and Nancy Moore.
He attended Centerville schools and then went to the University of Iowa where he got his law degree. During his college days he was called to serve in the Army during World War I. He returned to Centerville where he practiced law for 60 years, serving in offices as County Attorney, City Attorney, and State Senator for Appanoose and Davis Counties. He served as the President of the Iowa Bar Association and local Board of Education. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Legion and Masonic Lodge. In 1978 he retired and moved to Des Moines where he resided in the Calvin Manor.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 at Lange Funeral Home with the Rev. L. Hune Ward and John Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville with military rites. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 until 8:30.
A memorial has been established to the Calvin Manor or the donor's choice.
