Charles Walden Kindig died at his home at Richardson Springs, Sunday afternoon, March 20, 1955 after an illness of several months.
He was born August 21 1871 in Centerville, Iowa to Benjamin F. Kindig and Mary Kindig who settled in Centerville in 1858. On May 8th 1895 Charles married Mont Richardson, in Centerville.
In April 1898 he enlisted in Company E of the 50th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers ehere he hald the rank of corporal.
In Centerville he was employed by Bing Staley as foreman in the construction business. He was among the men who built the Appanoose County Couryhouse in 1903 and the present post office. When the former High School (that burned) was built Mr Kindig was foreman in charge of carpenters. They also erected a major portion of the coal mine tipples in the county in the days when coal mining was the number one industry here.
Mr Kindig was a 53-year veteran of Jackson Lodge 42 AF&AM Centerville, a member of Lodge 42 RAM, Chico, and the US Spanish War Veterans Cahill Camp 52 in Chico.
It was in 1921 Mr. Kindig and family moved to California - to Richardson Springs 12 miles from Chico where he supervised construction of the present hotel and many of the cottages.
He is survived by his wife Mont and three sons, Archie P of Fort Jones, Bruce O. of Benica and Robert I. of Vallejo all in California. Of his four sisters the three surviving are Mrs. Jessie Fox of Havana, Illinois, Mrs Minnie Wright and Mrs Ella Graham both of Chico, and Mrs. Ida Meers deceased. There are also three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren surviving.
Charlie was held in the highest esteem among the workmen of Centerville, and a great many former friends mourn his passing.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, March 23, 1955 at one o'clock in the Case Chapel of Chico, by Chico Lodge No 111 F&AM. Interment was in the Masonic Section of Chico Cemetery.
