Terrible Accident
Yesterday evening about six o'clock Wm. Houghland, of Brazil, was killed by a freight train on the Milwaukee near Diamond, and about two miles from this place.
He had been working at Diamond and was returning from work in company with another man whose name we did not learn, and together they were walking along the railroad. A train coming along from the north, they stepped off the track to let it pass. On a stock car one of the boards on which the initials and number of the car is printed, was loose, and just as it was opposite Mr. Houghhand it flew out and struck him on the side of the head, crushing in the skull in a horrible manner. The man who was with him, was ahead of Mr. Houghland and noticed the board just in time to dodge it, and thus escaped the fate that befell his fellow-man. The train stopped and took up the injured man and backed down to Mystic, where Dr. Paso was summoned to his aid, but with all his skill he was unable to do anything for him and he died in about an hour.
An inquest was begun last night, but adjourned after taking the testimony of the man who witnessed the accident until some time to-day, or as soon as the train men who have been summoned, can get here.
The above information was obtained from one of the coroner’s jury just before going to press this morning, and is as correct as is possible to obtain at this time.
The deceased was a carpenter by trade, and an industrious, hard-working man, and the loss will fall heavily upon the family. We understand the funeral services will be held to-morrow
at Philadelphia church.—Mystic Letter.

Note: Houghland. Wm. H, Civil war, died Aug. 23, 1893.
