HARVEY COCHRAN,
COUNTY PIONEER
CALLED BY DEATH
Civil War Veteran and Early Settler
Died Friday Morning at Age of Almost 90

Exline, Ia., Aug. 13.—(Special)—
Harvey Cochran, pioneer resident of Appanoose county, and one of Iowa's early settlers, also one of the three remaining Civil war veterans of Exline vicinity, died Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. M. Tull, a short distance south of Exline. He would have been 90 years old next November 4th. Mr. Cochran had been in failing health for several months, failingrapidly the past few weeks.
Deceased was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, coming to Appanoose with his parents at the age of two years. It is believed he held the long time record for residence in this county. As a young man he enlisted in the union army, serving with Company F, 17th Iowa Inf., and was imprisoned at Andersonville for a time. Returning to Appanoose county after the war he
engaged in farming for a time. Beginning in 1902, he served as rural mail carrier out of Exline for 20 years or more. He was a member of the Exline Methodist church and had been called upon by his neighbors to serve in official town and township task. He was one of the sturdy pioneers who saw Appanoose county grow from a wilderness into an area of thriving villages, towns, cities and prosperous rural sections.
Surviving members of his family are the following children: Mrs. F. M. Tull and Huston Cochran of Exline; Mrs. Anna Roby, of Mystic; Mrs. George Holland of Eldon; George Cochran, of Grinnell, Mrs. Lillie Amos of Farmington, Ia., and Mrs. P. A. Hollenbeck of Centerville.
A more complete obituary will appear later.
