Centerville Citizen
June 8, 1872

Just as we go to press, this Friday afternoon, we learn that Jacob Shaw, south of town, met with an accident which it is thought will prove
fatal. He was sitting under a derrick which is being used to drill for coal, near his house, when the rope broke and the drill fell and struck him on the head crushing in his skull. Several physicians are now in attendance.

It is our painful duty to record the death of an old and esteemed citizen, Mr. Jacob Shaw. As was announced in the last Citizen, he met with the accident which caused his death in the afternoon of Friday of last week. He was helping to loosen the anger which was being used to drill for coal when the swivel-hook of the pulley gave way letting the pulley, which weighed seven pounds, fall a distance of about thirty feet striking him on the head. Four men were at the windlass, pulling with all their strength to raise the auger when the pully gave way, the tension of the rope throwing it down with almost as much force as though it had been shot from the cannon. His head was fearfully mangled, and he only lived four hours. On Sunday, he was buried by the Masons, about fifteen hundred people being present. An affecting sermon was preached by Eld. R. B. Allender. Mr. Shaw was born in Muskingham county, Ohio, Jan. 11th,1819; removed to Iowa in 1854, settling near Burlington; remained there one winter and in the spring of 1855 removed to Appanoose county, where he has since lived and honored and respected citizen. He was married in Rush county, Indiana, March
27th, 1839 to Elsey Wilder. She died Feb. 20th, 1866. In Feb. 21st, 1869, he was again married to Mrs. Kate McDowell. He has eight children living. He has been a member of the Methodist church for the last thirty years, always taking an active interest in the welfare of the church.
Two and a half years ago this unfortunate family was caused to mourn the loss of one of its members, Russell, by an accident in a coal bank which caused his death within six hours. The family of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire community in this their sad bereavement.
