R. D. Voorhees died in the night
at his home near Unionville last night

HEART FAILURE THE CAUSE

Wife went to call him and found
turn dead—An early settler and
old Soldier well-known in County.

R. D. Voorhees was found by his wife dead in bed this morning when she went to call him for breakfast. He had been dead several hours and physicians called attributed his death to heart failure, for which he was subject. Funeral arrangements have been made for Friday morning from his late residence three and one-half miles
northeast of Unionville.
R. D. Voorhees was one of the most widely known citizens of Appanoose county, coming to the count shortly after the close of the war. He was a highly honored citizen and his death will cause universal mourning in the county among the older settlers. He was born in Fulton county, ILL., in 1842 and was in his 64th year at the
time of his death. In 1870 he was married to Maggie E. Middleton, who survives him. They now have two daughters and one son living. He was
a soldier in Company D., 103d ILL., and participated at Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta and other important battles of the war. He was mustered out at Louisville, Ky., in 1865. He moved to this county in 1870. He was a prominent Mason, Knight Templar, Knight of Pythias and a Shriner. His acquaintance in the county is wide and he is recognized as one having the best interests of the county at heart.
Yesterday he was in Unionville leaving for home about 5:00 o'clock. He seemed in good health and made no complaints of feeling ill at any time. He went to bed at his usual time last night and this morning when his wife called him to breakfast he made no reply and when she went to the bed she found him cold in death. Physicians were summoned but to no avail as he had been dead several hours.

Mr. Voorhees buried at Unionville cemetery, Appanoose county, Iowa.
