James M. Dale Died Last Night
at His North Hill Residence.

Sick Only a Few Weeks But Declining in
Health For a Year—Funeral at
1:30 p. m., Tomorrow From Residence.

James Dale, whose illness has been chronicled by the Citizen the past few days, died at his residence on North Hill last night shortly after 9:00 o'clock. The immediate cause of his death was yellow jaundice. At the time of his death, which has been hourly expected for several days, he was surrounded by the members of his family, and he passed peacefully away. His age was 61 years, six weeks and one day. The funeral services will be conducted from his late residence tomorrow, January 4, at 1:30 p. m. and his remains will afterwards be interred in Dale cemetery at Dale church, northeast of the city, two miles.
James Madison Dale was born in Indiana, November 20, 1840 and came to Iowa with his parents in 1848. Both of his parents died while residents of
this county and were buried in the Dale cemetery.
Mr. Dale was married two times. His first wife was Miss Malinda Long, of Appanoose county, and they were married June 20, 1861. To them four children were born and all survive their parents, viz., John V. and Lemuel Dale,
and Mesdames G. B. Steele and G. E. Climie. The mother died in 1869. The present wife who survives him was Miss Sarah Kirkham.
Mr. Dale has been a farmer and stock raiser all of his life, but a few years ago retired and moved to Centerville. He was one of Appanoose county's wealthiest and most prominent citizens and was a hard working, industrious and upright man. He was a member of the Christian church and was. one of the builders or the Dale church northeast of Centerville, which was named after him. He had never been sick until about a year ago when he began to decline in health and his
last sickness was of only a few week's duration. His death will be a surprise to many,
especially those who did not know of his recent serious illness, as to all appearances he was a strong and healthy man. Appanoose county loses another of her oldest and best citizens by his death and the family a kind father and faithful husband.
