STILL ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Addison Pendergast Passes Away at 5:00
O'clock this Morning.

The CITIZEN is again called upon to chronicle the death of another highly respected Appanoose county pioneer, Addison Pendergast died at his home in Lincoln township at the early hour of 5 o'clock this morning, after a long and
useful life of 57 years. Mr. Pendergast was born in Ripley county, Indiana, and moved with his parents to Lee county Iowa, in 1848, where he resided a short time before moving to Appanoose county, where he has since made his home. August 12, 1861, he responded to the call of his country and enlisted as sergeant in Company B, Sixth Kansas cavalry, and served through four
years of war. At the battle of Mozzard Prairie, Ark., July 24, 1864, he was wounded in the shoulder by a rebel bullet and this would has been the source of great inconvenience and suffering to him ever since and was the
ultimate cause of his death. After being wounded he was taken prisoner and marched 150 miles to Pans, Texas, before having his wound dressed. He
then was taken to the rebel prison at Tyler, Texas, where he served a term of ten months. The march of 350 miles was made on foot, except occasional rides tendered him by the rebel guards, which were very few. During all his
service in the war and while in the rebel prison he was the tent mate of N. M. Scott, now treasurer of Appanoose county, and they have always been the closest bosom friends. Mr. Pendergast returned from the war "converted the
sword into the plowshare" and at once engaged in the peaceful pursuit of farming in Lincoln township, which he has followed since, securing for himself an excellent farm and one of the most comfortable homes in the county. In 1866
he was married to Miss Elmira Snedeker in Caldwell township, who now survives him with two sons, who are unmarried and live at home. Mr. Pendergast was one of Appanoose county's best citizens and his death is mourned by a wide
circle of Appanoose county friends. He was a member of John L. Bashore Post, which will attend the funeral services at the late residence tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
The funeral will be conducted by Reverend Powelson and the remains interred in the {Jerome} cemetery near Plano.
