Iconium Couple
Wed 57 Years
On the evening of Feb. 16, 1882, Miss Anna Howard and Mr. Lou Funkhouser were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Howard, on their farm in Monroe county, Iowa. The Rev. William Kelsey, pastor of the Salem church, performed the ceremony in the presence of about 50 guests.
Those now living who were in attendance and enjoyed the big wedding supper are: Mrs. Funkhouser's two brothers, Will Howard
of Nebraska, and Pearl Howard of Oklahoma; her sister, Mrs. Ella Gorsuch of Minnesota; Mr. Funkhouser's sister, Mrs. Dora Hellyer of Iconium.
The bride was beautiful in her grey cashmere wedding gown. She chose blue for her second day dress when a big dinner was served in their honor at the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Funkhouser.
They went to housekeeping on the bridegroom's farm about 4 miles northeast of Iconium where their three children were born. In the spring of 1903 they bought the former Dr. Bilby, property and moved to Iconium where Mr. Funkhouser worked at the carpenter trade.
Mr. and Mrs. Funkhouser were converted during the ministry of Rev. VanWinkle, when Iconium was on the Melrose circuit, and have been members of the Methodist church 45 years. He served
faithfully as Sunday School superintendent for a number of years.
Mrs. Funkhouser was an efficient Ladies Aid president. She always enjoyed quilting and there are many beautiful quilts made with her needlework. Their three children are Mrs. Bessie Davis of Cheyenne, Wyo., Arlo of Murray, Iowa, and Howard of Davenport, Iowa. There are also 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
Their wedding day 57 years ago was beautiful. Roads were dusty and guests came in wagons. There were no buggies. Many friends and relatives extend congratulations and wish them many more years of wedded life.
