In Response To: 1920/1930 Hockey/Skiing in New Albin area? (Julie)

Hi Julie,

I grew up in New Albin and have done extensive research on the area, and I've never heard anything about a ski jump in the area. Cross country skiing may have been popular with all the hills and trails in the area.

I've never heard anything about hockey being a popular sport, either. New Albin is and always has been a big baseball town, but no hockey teams/leagues ever existed to my knowledge.

That being said, it's always possible that skiing and hockey were popular sports in the area at some point, and were just not documented. As I mentioned, New Albin is surrounded by hills and bluffs...and LOTS of trees. Anything other than cross country skiing would be rather dangerous in my opinion.

I do remember my grandpa talking about ice skating in the winter, and there is certainly no shortage of ice in New Albin in the winter and places to skate, so I'm sure hockey was played by some of the town kids, but not as any sort of team sport.

Hope that helps! I'll also do some asking around and let you know if I learn anything more on the subject. Happy researching!

~Errin
