All it takes is a little research and I've answered my own question!! This is what I found:
VAS was the name/motto of a late 19th century fraternal benefit society. VAS stood for the Latin words "Vera Amicitia Sempiterna" which means "True friendship is eternal."
Hope this helps others whose ancestors were members of this society. Linda
