James I Gilbert

I have already found some information on Col. Gibert,but the reason I was looking for it was we have a friend that has a colt gun with the name James I Gilbert Lansing, Iowa on the back strap of the gun. I was hoping to find some posting where he was presented this gun by his regiment or his commanders. If you have any addition information I would love to have it. I am going to try to get our friends to turn this gun over to your town if I can document it history.
